DENVER -- The first speaker at this morning's delegation breakfast was the state's senior U.S. Senator, Patty Murray. Notably, much of her words were spent applauding the delegates for the hard work and sacrifice they were making for the good of the party, if not the country.
"I know that all of you, just like me, want to do more than just yell at your television set," Murray said. "That is what this election is about you are participating. Thank you very much."
She said that the participation in the caucuses and the local campaigns have excited her, and commented that they would bring about a new energy in the party that would last.
Murray also spoke a bit on Senate matter, drawing loud applause for saying that she had become the highest ranking female in the body, and that each of her colleagues are looking forward to the possibility of a Democratic president, which would allow a majority Democratic Senate to "make this country strong again."
The senior Senator also said she was excited to hear New York Senator Hillary Clinton address the convention tonight, and spoke highly of her former rival, the presumptive nominee Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.).
"I know Barack Obama well," Murray said of her colleague. "I can tell you he is a man of passion, deep conviction and strength. He is going to be a tremendous commander in chief."
Finally, Murray brought up the Building Industry Association of Washington billboards that say, "Don't let Seattle steal this election," which she said she had recently seen on a trip to Eastern Washington.
"We do not need a governor that divides our state," Murray stated. "We are a state that will be strong when we stand together."
