Cantwell sees Washington Dems as a 'beacon'

DENVER -- Senator was the word of the day at this morning's delegate breakfast in Denver. Right on the heels of Patty Murray, the state's junior Senator, Maria Cantwell, spoke about renewable energy and Washington's obligation to give the Democrats a strong voice this fall.

"I'm glad to be here after last night," she said of the speeches by Michelle Obama and Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.). "We couldn't have had a better convention."

Cantwell then reminded the Democrats how hard they will have to work for the good of the country by setting an example. She said that electing Barack Obama and Democratic congressional candidates would lead to universal health care and "a new energy day in America."

"I want our country to invest in renewable energy and quit making middle class Americans take money away from our children and put prices in the pump," she said. "We have to come out of Denver showing that we are going to have the same kind of intensity to get out this vote and make Barack Obama the next president of the United States."

She acknowledged that Obama and Biden may not show their faces in the state, "but we need to go out and get out the vote anyway."

Cantwell concluded by arguing that the policies Chris Gregoire have been implementing and advocating were a boon not just to the state, but instead had a much wider reach.

"We need a governor not just for our state," the junior U.S. Senator proclaimed, but to "become a beacon for the rest of the country and that is why we need to make sure Chris Gregoire is re-elected."
