Small business owner values Whitman background

MINNEAPOLIS - Phil Bevis, a McCain delegate from Seattle, started a business in 1984 simply to publish a book about Westerns. Now, more than two decades later, he has two retail stores and two warehouses in addition to the small publishing house, three of which are located in Washington state.

So Bevis appreciated the notion that former eBay CEO Meg Whitman focused her speech on John McCain's commitment to small businesses, notably lowering their taxes.

"Most people think that jobs come from big companies but in fact large corporations are net destroyers of jobs," Bevins said. "They consolidate employment, they don't create it. Job creation in our economy comes almost in its entirety from small and medium sized businesses."

Notably, Bevis liked Whitman's credibility on the issue because of the incredible influence of eBay on small market-based businesses.

"It is particularly pertinent when she is speaking because not only is she speaking to the average voter and the average business person, she is speaking to the tens of millions of people who have used eBay who understand that because of the way they connect small business with your online buyer, she really understands what she is talking about."

He contrasted this with his view of the Democrats, especially Barack Obama's plan to create jobs by investing in energy infrastructure.

"Barack Obama has no idea where jobs come from," Bevis said. "He thinks they come from government. I don't think he understands the burden that the social security tax system places on employers like me. It is very hard for us to maintain our existing employment base. It is even harder for me to create additional jobs. Government makes it more difficult every step of the way."
