McCarthy looks strong in Pierce Co. exec race

With just under 100,000 votes counted in the Pierce County executive race, Pat McCarthy (D-Tacoma) appears to be headed to victory.

The election, which is using ranked choice voting for the first time in county history, showed Shawn Bunney (R-Bonney Lake) leading after the first round of votes with 32 percent, but after Mike Loner an (I-Tacoma) and Calvin Goings (D-Puyallup) were eliminated within the RCV rules, and their second place votes disbursed , McCarthy took a 55-45 lead over Bunney.

All of this is subject to change as more votes are counted.

Kelly Haughton notes on his RCV blog that, despite Lonergan attempting to run as a Republican but failing to win the party’s endorsement, a plurality of his second choice votes went to McCarthy, as did a majority of Goings’ votes. Goings had endorsed McCarthy as a second choice, but many supporters of his campaign have been at odds with McCarthy’s ties to the Master Builders Association of Pierce County, a branch of the Building Industry Association of Washington.

Looks like RCV worked

Looks like ranked choice voting worked pretty well in Pierce County. Happy to see it.
