Goings concerned with outcome of RCV

Pierce County Councilman Calvin Goings (D-Puyallup) was part of the first batch of candidates to experience Pierce County's new ranked choice voting system, and now that results are in he has his doubts.

Goings, who appears headed for a second round dismissal from the RCV rolls, worries that the Democrats will wind up unfairly out in the cold after all the rankings are done.

Below is an excerpt from a letter he sent to supporters Monday morning.

Finally, like you, I am deeply concerned that in a Democratic year of change it appears that because of Ranked Choice Voting, Pierce County will be a red mark on a blue state. While there are thousands of votes yet to be counted, recent trends seem to indicate that Shawn Bunney is closing on Pat McCarthy and myself for Executive, Dale Washam is leading Barbara Gelman for Assessor-Treasurer, and Joyce McDonald is leading Al Rose and Carolyn Merrival for Council. If current trends continue, Pierce County could see a Republican Executive and a supermajority (5 seats to two) of Republicans on the County Council.

These races are not at risk because Republicans received more total votes, quite the opposite. These seats are in jeopardy because multiple Democrats ran for each position. Soon, county Democrats will need to do some real soul searching on how we run and win in a Ranked Choice Voting environment. Clearly the Republicans have already thought this through.

Currently, in the Pierce County executive race, Bunney (R-Bonney Lake) leads in first place votes with 34 percent to McCarthy's (D-Tacoma) 27 percent, Goings' 23 percent, and Mike Lonergan's 15 percent. After two rounds of dropping the last place candidates and re-administering their 2nd and 3rd choice votes, McCarthy currently leads Bunney in the final tally, 52-48.

But as Goings notes, the late-breaking voting has been trending toward Republicans, and could be enough to allow Bunny to overtake McCarthy. Pierce County will release its next round of RCV voting results on Friday.

RCV

A voting method should never be evaluated based on whether a Democrat or Republican wins, but on whether the will of the voters is respected and triumphs. RCV meets that standard, by allowing us to avoid the "spoiler" problem when the voters are presented with more choices. With RCV, split majorities can re-coalesce for the strongest candidate. RCV is great...politician strateggies may be weak, but ultimately RCV gives the voters more power.

Pierce County and Republicans

Long time State Senator Marilyn Rasmussen (D) has lost her seat in Pierce County. Democratic State Rep. Pat Lantz's seat has gone Republican. Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg (D) lost Pierce County by 15 points in his bid to be Attorney General. Pierce County was the only county in the state to pass Tim Eyman's initiative.

Pierce County shifted towards Republicans this year. RCV did not cause this event. I don't know why the shift, but it happened across the board. It happened in top 2 races. It happened in initiatives.
