On the eve of the state's Democratic Legislative District caucuses, King County Executive Ron Sims was profiled by NPR's All Things Considered today because of his role as a superdelegate. The piece highlighted his unique role as an African American who supports Hillary Clinton, and as an electe superdelegate who has endorsed against the strong will of his constituents. King County caucused overwhelmingly for Barack Obama.
Sims points to his familiarity with the Clintons as the main reason for his choice. He said he was grateful for having been invited to the White House a number of times during Bill Clinton's tenure there, and when Bill asked Sims recently to consider endorsing Hillary Sims said, "I thought it was a debt he could collect."
He also said that he could not be guilted by questioning his commitment to the aspirations of African-Americans. But, in a bright spot for Obama backers, Sims admitted that it would be hard for any superdelegate to go against the will of the pledged delegates. When asked if that specifically referred to him, Sims merely repeated his statement.
