Senator Harriet Spanel Endorses Ken Henderson for 40th District Senate.

Harriet Spanel has announced that she supports Ken Henderson in his bid for the Senate seat from which she is retiring.

Senator Harriet Spanel pledged her sole endorsement this week for Ken Henderson, candidate for the 40th District Senate seat from which Spanel is retiring.

"Ken's views on many issues are similar to mine and I appreciate his willingness to listen and his follow through", Spanel stated.

Harriet Spanel has built a legacy as a civic leader and as a legislator serving the communities of the 40th District in the House and Senate since 1987. Spanel’s legislative leadership includes serving as the Senate Democratic Caucus Chair, Senate Majority Leader and Senate Majority Whip. Senator Spanel, more commonly known as “Harriet,” has touched the lives of many in the 40th District over her 20 plus years of excellence in service.

Henderson is endorsed by 40th District Representative Dave Quall and a number of other current and former elected officials, community leaders, the Washington State Labor Council and local unions.

Ken Henderson, 59, practiced optometry for 25 years in Bellingham, Lynden and Eastsound. Ken posses a progressive approach to long term solutions. He has extensive community and government service in a broad range of areas from health care, community planning, aging and mental health, and environmental protection. Ken is a graduate of Skagit Valley College, Western Washington University and Pacific University. He served on the Whatcom County Council, Bellingham Planning Commission, United Way board, and a number of other government and community organizations. Ken has been a strong advocate for parks in the area, serving eight years on the Whatcom County Parks Board, as president of the Whatcom Parks and Recreation Foundation and is currently serving on the Deception Pass State Park Advisory Board. Ken has been providing health care for economically disadvantaged patients locally in his practice and in medical missions to Central America for many years. Ken is a Vietnam veteran and has been married to his wife Janet Stoupa of Mount Vernon, for 33 years and they have two adult children.
