Bellingham Herald Endorses Henderson for Senate

(Online article available at http://www.bellinghamherald.com/315/story/483795.html)

Bellingham-The Sunday edition of the Bellingham Herald featured their endorsement for the 40th District Senate seat. The Bellingham Herald editorial board held an interview process with all candidates and came to the conclusion that Ken Henderson is the best candidate to replacement retiring senator Harriet Spanel.

“We believe Henderson stands out from that group (other candidates) in that he better understands how to represent all constituents of this area. “

“It is an honor to gain the endorsement of the Bellingham Herald. If elected as your next state senator I will serve the residents of all communities in the 40th District with pride and dedication,” stated Henderson Sunday morning.

The Bellingham Herald also mentioned that retiring senator Harriet Spanel and popular state Rep. Dave Quall have both endorsed Henderson stating,

“These two long-serving representatives of this district know that Henderson has the right mix of experience and knowledge of local issues to best serve the district.”

During the course of the last 10 days Henderson also racked up endorsements from Scott McMullen, John Cheney and Mike Urban, who are all members of the Mount Vernon City Council, as well as former 40th LD senate candidate and previous Mount Vernon City Council member, Paul Gonzales. With these additions, Henderson has now gained the endorsement of 28 current and past elected/appointed officials, which further indicates recognition of Henderson’s ability to lead. The WA Federation of State Employees/AFSCME and the Joint Council of Teamsters No. 28, joined the long list of union support last week as well.

Ken Henderson, 59, practiced optometry for 25 years in Bellingham, Lynden and Eastsound. Ken possesses a progressive approach to long term solutions. He has extensive community and government service in a broad range of areas from health care, community planning, aging and mental health, and environmental protection. Ken is a graduate of Skagit Valley College, Western Washington University and Pacific University. He served on the Whatcom County Council, Bellingham Planning Commission, United Way board, and a number of other government and community organizations. Ken has been a strong advocate for parks in the area, serving eight years on the Whatcom County Parks Board, as president of the Whatcom Parks and Recreation Foundation and is currently serving on the Deception Pass State Park Advisory Board. Ken has been providing health care for economically disadvantaged patients locally in his practice and in medical missions to Central America for many years. Ken is a Vietnam veteran and has been married to his wife Janet Stoupa of Mount Vernon, for 33 years and they have two adult children.
