Many Democratic Candidates on the Ballot-40th LD Senate

August 16, 2008 Press Release or Immediate Release Contact: Jedediah Smart 360.715.1366   Many Democratic Candidates on the 40th LD Senate Ballot   With only a few days left before Primary ballots must be turned in, it is important to let voters know that there will be several candidates on the ballot that are marked as Democratic candidates for the 40th LD Senate seat, being vacated by Harriet Spanel. Two of these candidates on the ballot are Stephanie Kountouros and Paul Gonzales. Both of these candidates have withdrawn from the race and have asked their supporters to cast their vote for Ken Henderson. Retiring 40th LD Senator Harriet Spanel, has also voiced her sole endorsement for Ken Henderson for the primary election. Long serving 40th LD Rep Dave Quall, of Mount Vernon has also asked supporters to cast their vote for Ken Henderson. Additionally, there is one independent candidate, Steve Hopley (Anacortes Port Commissioner) who also dropped from the race and will not appear on the ballot.

Bellingham-Former 40th LD senate candidate and grassroots/community organizer Stephanie Kountouros has endorsed Ken Henderson. Stephanie is well known for her strong stance on social justice issues and participation as a Washington State Democratic platform representative. As a community coordinator she was credited as leading on of the most well organized and effective Obama county campaigns in the nation. Kountouros’ endorsement comes at a pinnacle time in the campaign season. Voters just received mail-in ballots this week and many wonder who is the best choice to replace long serving, Senator Harriet Spanel.

Ranker wins Dem nomination in 40th LD Senate race

Kevin RankerKevin RankerSan Juan Island Democrat Kevin Ranker won the 40th Legislative District's Democratic nomination Sunday, prevailing over field of five Democrats, the deepest in the state for any race, vying for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Harriet Spanel.

Ranker won on the first round of balloting. He received 260 weighted Precinct Committee Officer votes, 54 percent of the total. Hue Beatty (D-Bellingham) came in second with 94 votes (20 percent) followed by Ken Henderson (D-Bellingham) with 78 (16 percent) and Stephanie Kountouros (D-Bellingham) with 48 (10 percent). Paul Gonzales (D- Mount Vernon) did not receive any PCO votes.

40th Dist. Senate seat gets more crowded

The Bellingham Herald is reporting that the race for retiring Sen. Harriet Spanel's seat in the 40th LD has grown by two already this week.

The coordinator of Whatcom for Obama, Stephanie Kountouros (D-Bellingham), and a 22-year veteran of the Washington State Patrol, Paul Gonzales (D-Mount Vernon) are the latest entrants into a contest that now has six candidates.
