Behind in cash, Republicans rely on anti-choice issues to force turnout

As Bryan Bissell reports, 8th CD challenger Darcy Burner is leading Republican incumbent Dave Reichert with $1.2 million cash on hand. Burner is one of many Democrats leading in the money race - nine of CQ's top 10 sport a "D" by their name - and presidential candidate Barack Obama is the biggest leader of all. Obama not only has more cash on hand than any presidential candidate in history, he also has access to more cash from more donors than anyone thought imaginable.

So what's a poor Republican to do?

Go back to the base.

The LA Times argues that Republicans are relying on social issues - abortion, gay marriage, and other evangelical hot buttons - to turnout the right and give Republicans a fighting chance.

In Washington, that means Republican gubernatorial challenger Dino Rossi might finally admit to being anti-abortion, and evangelicals and right-to-lifers will be crusading agains I-1000's death with dignity provisions.

While most polls have Washington firmly in the blue column, and the state has a reputation for being pro-choice, a strong anti-choice (for birth or death) turnout could have an effect on both the gubernatorial and the presidential election.

Huh. Is that 84% of eligible (doubt it) or 84% of registered (more likely, and registered voters account for about 60% of those who are eligible to vote), and does it account for all of the new registrations between then and now?

People who are against

People who are against abortion, Republicans, independents, or Democrats are not "anti-choice" anymore than people who support abortion-rights are "anti-life" or "pro-death". Wally Edge calling people who disagree with him "anti-choice" just serves to move all of us backward. People who call themselves "pro-life" are not "anti-choice". They just don't see the issue as being about women's rights, they believe an unborn baby is a real human baby worth protecting.

Ok, how do you have a turnout "surge" when in 2004 the turnout was 84% in WA?

What are you going to hit, 85%, and that will make the difference for the GOP? Give me a break!
