Washington begins an effort to relegate traffic to the working poor when High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes open Saturday on SR 167. For some extra cash, anywhere up to $9, single-occupancy cars can pay extra to ride in the carpool lane, and to avoid the annoyance of carpooling with Nan from accounting.
As the lane gets more crowded, the toll rises in order to keep traffic moving, or in order to ensure that middle class folks really can’t afford to drive towards the city.
Both gubernatorial candidates are in favor. With any luck, HOT lanes will raise enough money to build more roads.
